Guilt by Association

There’s a particularly egregious bit of legislation tossed into the Senate hopper from Senator Ted Cruz. S68 essentially criminalizes Muslim social, educational, business, and political groups under the guise of declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.  Granted the MB isn’t a lovely group worthy of our support, but the way the legislation is currently drafted any organization “affiliated” with it would be essentially criminalized.

Whoa. Without specifically defining precisely what “affiliated” means this overly broad categorization could snare perfectly legitimate Muslim charitable and political organizations.

Co-sponsors to date are Orrin Hatch (R-UT), James Inhofe (R-OK), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and Ron Johnson  (R-WI)

As a survivor of the McCarthy Era, this legislation smacks of the tactics used to delegitimize political dissent that marred our democracy of that time. Please consider asking your Senators to oppose this bill.
